Chapter 23

“What’s going on?” I shouted to no one in particular.

“A chemical reaction to something on the bowling balls,” a woman shouted back as she followed at least eight or nine other women to the restroom. “We called the fire department and the EMTs are on the way.”

“Phee! Where were you? What took you so long?” My mother thundered over with Shirley at her heels muttering, “Lordy, Lordy.”

Then Myrna and Herb made their way to us. “It all happened at once,” Myrna said. “Never saw anything like it. One minute people are lining up to bowl and the next, they’re shaking their hands and scratching frantically.”

“Like dogs with fleas.” Herb chuckled.

“That’s not funny. It had to be something they touched,” my mother said. She reached into her bag and pulled out a box of doggie wipes. “I always keep these for Streetman. Here, everyone, take one and wipe your hands. It says doggie wipes but I’m pretty sure you can use them on people.”

“Nothing starts to itch that fast,” I said.

Myrna all but rubbed the skin off her knuckles. “It did here. One minute people are yakking and the next they’re itching and scratching. I’m not taking any chances. That’s why all the bowlers are running to the sinks. But I guarantee we’ll be told its contact dermatitis. That’s what my doctor says all the time. It’s a medical term for ‘I have no idea what it is.’”

“Not all the bowlers are at the sinks,” Kenny said. “Some are okay.” He walked up behind Myrna and reached for one of my mother’s doggie wipes. “It’s a stampede in the men’s room. Pretty soon they’ll be rinsing off their hands in the toilets because the sinks are packed.”

“Lordy, that’s an image I don’t want in my mind.” Shirley turned to the restroom doors and shook her head.

“What did you mean when you said some of the bowlers were all right?” I asked.

Kenny pointed to the racks of bowling balls that belonged to the rec center. “Only the folks who used the rec center bowling balls had that reaction. People who brought their own to the lane didn’t. Can’t believe of all days to leave my bowling ball in my wife’s car. She’s at Walmart and I’d never see the light of day waiting for her to get home so I decided to use one of the alley’s balls.”

Johnson Lanes turned into a madhouse with bowlers itching their hands and demanding answers from the poor monitor at the counter. The woman kept telling them she had phoned the fire department and asked that they please calm down.

Then, a booming voice as Mini-Moose approached from the billiard room. “What the heck is going on in here? Don’t tell me you found more lizards.”

The monitor started to explain but everyone spoke at once, and it wasn’t until a half dozen firefighters and a few EMTs came into the bowling alley that they calmed down.

“We’ve been exposed to something toxic,” one of the men said when asked by an EMT to explain.
